What is writing, and why are we studying it?
We've all had boring, pointless classes in which we do nothing but memorize facts, listen to lectures, take objective tests, and promptly forget everything. Such a class is a waste of money and time. This class is the opposite of that type of class. In my class, you must think independently and boldly experiment to succeed. Make no mistake, this is a difficult and challenging course that will require a lot of time and effort. Writing well requires hard work even for professional writers, so you can imagine how much harder it is for beginners who are still learning the ropes. However, if you can tough it out in my class, you will soon find yourself writing better than you ever have before. You will look through your portfolio at the end of the semester and be amazed at how far you've come. I'll either turn you into a great college writer or flunk you trying.
For our first online discussion, I'd like to ask you to do some serious thinking. What is writing and why are we studying it? Why is this course a requirement? Don't just go for an easy answer. THINK about it carefully before answering. Before you post, look through the previous responses. Instead of just repeating what has been said before, see if you can respond intelligently, either agreeing or disagreeing with others' points, but providing new insight into the question. Build on what others have said--you can even quote them if you'd like.
I look forward to reading some thoughtful and deep meditations on this question. See if you can surprise me with your cleverness.
